Who’s your teacher?
Last year (2010) I was asked by Manfrotto (the worlds biggest and best producer of camera, light and background supports) to start sharing my photographic experience/ knowledge with other photographers, photo enthusiasts and people in the industry. It was after they had seen me in a testimonial video for Kata bags that we did some years ago: http://www.kata-bags.com/mediacentre and checked out my portfolio.
I was a bit reluctant at first, as I myself haven’t gone to photo school and honestly find it quite boring to talk about technical details, charts and curves. I was however was given totally free hands to create my own webinars and workshops and soon discovered that not only do I really like it and learn a lot from it, but also that they are very appreciated. I keep getting great responses from “my students” and organizers…which now includes more brands and organizations…not just in Italy.
Some of the things that stand out are the subjects that I talk about and the way I explain things. Since my background includes more then 10 years as a make up artist and hair stylist: I have got to see and experience first hand how many different photographers and creative teams work.
I address “the soft values” that often get overlooked in photo schools, books and courses. From communication; how to get your vision across and how to understand your clients vision, team hierarchy and responsibility, to how to approach nude photography and understanding your own inner strengths and weaknesses. And my talks/ workshops about make up for photographers …how different types of makeup, lotions, powders and oils show up under different types of lights …has proven to be totally unique: Up to date, neither I nor any of the photographers I have talked to know about any course, book, seminar or article that covers this important subject.
Keep a look out for new tutorials here on the blog, book me in to hold a seminar/workshop, or come and attend one of my scheduled courses.
I also recommend you to visit the Manfrotto school of excellence site for inspiration and help http://manfrottoschoolofxcellence.com/tutors-contributors/ami-elsius/ where we; a bunch of super famous and less famous hand picked photographers from around the world share our tricks of the trade. There are many tutorials to watch and live webinars to attend, all totally free of charge.
Here are some photos from a weekend workshop I held at the Hilton in Malta, for the Malta Photographic Society. A part from various theoretical lessons the participants got to practice on 5 totally different studio set-ups as well.
